The society of the query and the Googlization of our lives

A tribute to Joseph Weizenbaum

"There is only one way to turn signals into information, through interpretation", wrote the computer critic Joseph Weizenbaum. As Google's hegemony over online content increases, argues Geert Lovink, we should stop searching and start questioning. [ more ]

The enzyme of freedom

"Transit" advocates a concerted EU approach to Russia; on '68, "Osteuropa" mends a split consciousness while "Mittelweg 36" regrets nothing; "Mute" critiques "Green capitalism"; "Esprit" observes democracy's transformations; "Wespennest" awaits something better; "Kulturos barai" defends Fluxus; "Host" hits the road; "Le Monde diplomatique" (Oslo) follows the comic strip of empire; "Dialogi" warns against experts; "Reset" seeks perspectives for Italy's Democrats.

Balcanis Self-description

Since November 2001, Balcanis has provided a channel for communication between cultures in the Balkans. The true "space" of Balcanis is marked neither by a border of state nor any other kind of border. The main criteria for defining "new territory" is the possibility of communication conditioned by cultural and linguistic similarities within south-eastern Europe and the Balkans. The project of the magazine Balcanis originates from and exceeds multiculturalism, in particular in the fields of language (the magazine is published in Slovenian, Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian, Macedonian, and English); politics and culture (the editorial board and contributors are chosen from all five states, in order to ensure equal representation of nationalities); creativity (the idea is a dialogue, the interaction of cultures, the exchange of information, and the establishment of a common cultural territory).

The association KUD Balkanika (publisher) is composed of artists and intellectuals important in the cultural life of the six countries in the Balkan region. In each country (Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia), an editorial team coordinates the work and looks for new names in the artisitic and theoretic fields. They are responsible for the selection from their respective country, which will is published and distributed throughout the whole region. Their different backgrounds, home cities, and generations, makes the project even more pluralistic and open for all kinds of ideas.

Among the authors writing in Balcanis are: Dr. Mitja Velikonja, Ivan Colovic, Milena Dragicevic-Sesic, Dubravka Ugresic, Kruno Lokotar, Vedrana Rudan, Dr. Rastko Mocnik, Teofil Pancic, Ivo Zanic, Ivan Lovrenovic, Goran Samardzic, Radmila Lazic, Eva Lipska, Georgi Gospodinov, Emilija Dvorjanova, Miroslav Dimitrov, David Albahari, Jan Cvitkovic, Zoran Ancevski, Bogomil Djuzel, Ales Debeljak, Enver Kazaz, Jagna Pogacnik, and Goran Petrovic.

Balcanis is distributed in newsagents and bookshops in Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro, Croatia, Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. All texts are available on: http://www.balcanis.com
